G. DEP EXPLAINS MURDER CONFESSION IN FIRST POST-PRISON INTERVIEW: 'I DID THE RIGHT THING'

G. Dep has broken his silence following his release from prison, explaining why he confessed to a murder almost 20 years after he committed the crime.

The rapper, who was signed to Diddy‘s Bad Boy Records in the ’90s, attempted to rob somebody at gunpoint in 1993, with the ensuing scuffle leading to the death of a man named John Henkel.

The murder went unsolved until 2010 when G. Dep (real name Trevell Coleman) confessed to the killing, resulting in him later being sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

The 49-year-old was released earlier this month after being granted clemency.

In his first interview since regaining his freedom, G. Dep spoke to The Art of Dialogue about why he confessed to the crime long after it happened.

“In order to restore balance to my life and someone’s family, I wanted to turn myself in and see what happened,” he said. “I was willing to put myself on the line, whether or not he passed on. I just needed to get that off my mind.”

G. Dep continued: “I did the right thing.”

The “Special Delivery” rapper also denied having any regrets for turning himself in despite the case having long gone cold and him not ever being considered as a suspect.

Shortly after his confession in late 2010, G. Dep said his conscience told him to come forward after being haunted by the crime for years.

“It was an ongoing thing. It wasn’t one of those things where I said, ‘Okay, I’m going to just do it.’ I was thinking about it for a while,” he told XXL. “That day, I did an interview for this public access show. Right after that, I decided to just go ahead to the precinct.

“I remember, in the precinct, when everything transpired, [the cop] gave me a phone to call my daughter’s mother. I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m going to have to go down for this, go through the system and all of that.’ So that was the first taste of just realizing that it’s a wrap.”

He added: “I felt like I was going to go through the same thing again — being happy, enjoying food and family — and I still didn’t handle what I thought I needed to. The reason why I probably did that at that time is I wanted… I couldn’t really continue to move on. I couldn’t move on and keep trying to satisfy myself if I didn’t deal with that.”

SZA & KEKE PALMER TO RECAPTURE 'SNL' CHEMISTRY IN NEW ISSA RAE-PRODUCED BUDDY COMEDY

SZA and Keke Palmer are set to recapture the chemistry from their 2022 Saturday Night Live episode for a new buddy comedy produced by Issa Rae.

Announced by Deadline on Friday (April 26), the as-of-yet untitled film is written by Rap Sh!t showrunner Syreeta Singleton, with fellow Rap Sh!t director Lawrence Lamont tapped to direct. No other details, including a release date, have been revealed.

The movie will mark SZA’s acting debut, though she got to tease her chops during the December 2022 SNL episode where she served as musical guest alongside Keke as host. According to Deadline, the SOS singer had been considering “a number of projects, and the opportunity to reunite with Palmer was too good to pass up.”

Reacting to the announcement with a screenshot of the article in an Instagram post, Keke wrote, “I CANT WAIT!!!”

On the music front, SZA recently announced that she will be remaking Lana – the deluxe edition of her SOS album – from scratch after fans leaked a number of songs slated for the project.

In since-deleted posts to Twitter/X  in late March, the “Snooze” singer expressed frustration at the songs hitting the web.

She wrote: “So, we’ll make this really simple. Y’all leaked three songs from the deluxe. At this point, y’all can keep the throwaways and leaks. I’ll be starting ‘Lana’ from scratch. Do not ask me about it again. Thank you.”

In a second post, she added: “I’ll round up the leaks y’all already got and u can have those. Seems like a fair deal. ENJOY.”

Earlier that month, the TDE singer ramped up excitement for Lana after releasing a racy teaser video.

With a caption that said: “Never fight over community D,” the TDE singer posted a video on Instagram, which included a snippet of a new song.

The accompanying visuals showed her frolicking around a room in a tent while wearing nothing but a red bikini.

SZA has been teasing an expansion of her blockbuster sophomore album for a while.

Late last year, she posted a number of potential covers for the deluxe version, titled Lana, and suggested the project would drop before Christmas but it never did.

She also spoke about the release with Billboard, saying: “After I do the deluxe, I’m hoping to be able to accept that this chapter is done. I’m looking forward to actually feeling proud of myself and not just smiling and nodding at accolades but really feeling it internally and knowing that I’m good enough.”

She added: “I guess I need to stop trying to figure out what it means and start realizing and living in what it is.”
